“cricket completely gave me confidence and friends, a social network, and a confidence in myself and something that I was good at and enjoyed…I’m a completely different person…it’s been my whole life”.

Cricket is changing; the way it’s played, where it’s played and how the game engages with people and partners.

The 2018 season will go down in the history of cricket in the Maldives alongside the 2010 Asian Cricket Council Trophy win.

The Cricket Board of Maldives met the ambition and drive of the I.C.C. to develop women’s cricket by delivering the first Women’s T20 Tournament in the country.

Cricket has to find ways to thrive and reach new audiences. Thus, a strong collaboration between C.B.M., the Government of Maldives and local Schools was forged to encourage girls and women to take up cricket.

Coaches were instructed to recruit girls by offering a new sport, a new set of skills and a game that anyone can learn and be a part of. To overcome the stereo-types associated with cricket in the Maldives and to educate all that cricket can be played whilst respecting cultural and religious codes of conduct, behaviour and dress.

All players and coaches involved in women’s cricket come from an indigenous background, native to the Maldives and are keenly encouraging peers, friends, family and colleagues to take up the game we love.

The enthusiasm and support extended by His Excellency The President, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the Honourable Ahmed Mahloof, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment towards cricket across our nation is vital encouragement to volunteers, coaches and officials to achieve success and development.

Cricket has a bright future across the whole country for everyone of all ages and ability. It is the responsibility of the Cricket Board of Maldives to support those interested in women’s cricket to have a structured approach to the game we love.

From the far north to the south Atolls, there are people about to make their first steps into cricket – these ‘pioneers’ are just as important as the established players, teams and coaches in the capital, Malé.

The C.B.M. has invested in the development of facilities in islands across the country, hand-in-hand with the recruitment and training of women into the sport.

1. Drive awareness of women’s cricket & increase participation

2. Increase media interest and coverage of women’s cricket

3. Create opportunities for the women’s cricket workforce

4. Access to indoor & outdoor training facilities

5. Develop a clearly defined player pathway
