The ‘Juniors’ came out as winners against the ‘Veterans’ in a one-off match played on Tuesday 27th October 2020 at Fuvahmulah Cricket Ground
The 22 players have all come through various cricket programmes conducted by the Cricket Board of Maldives in Fuvahmulah since 2012.
At 12 Overs an innings and time short, the match was enjoyed by all present and playing.
Winning the toss and choosing to field first, the ‘Juniors’ captained by Ali Yaneeu had to bowl with accuracy to prevent ‘Veteran’ openers Hanoon (7 runs from 7 balls) and Azin (17 runs from 18 balls) from scoring freely.
National footballer Ali Shamaal, with two bites of the apple, showed the spectators what he can do in this sport by hitting 17 off 12 balls – the best being a maximum 6 back over the bowlers head.
The Vets managed to set a target of 82 despite Mohamed Jushan picking up two wickets and 1 each for Mabsar, Haris, Yaneeu and Hassan Mutheeu.
With bragging rights at stake, the Juniors felt it necessary to be positive and thats what man of the match Mohamed Haris did – scoring 56 from just 22 runs as he and fellow opener Ali Yaneeu scored 80 runs between them before the Veterans snapped a wicket.
The Juniors claimed the victory in the 7th over as 13 year old Mabsar and 15 year old Zaadh sneaked a few singles of the bowling of Raee and Ma’aadh.
Match officials Aslam Rasheed, Ibrahim Lizaam and Liam McCumiskey thanked the players from the Veterans for organising todays match – although they don’t play regularly for various reasons, their passion for the game was evident.
The Cricket Board of Maldives presented the champions with their trophy and commiserations to the losers.
