2022 Ramadan Cricket Carnival – Open Tournament

The nations largest Ramadan sports competition began on April 3rd with the start of the ‘Open Tournament’ at Ekuveni Cricket Ground in Malé.

13 Teams took part in this edition with players eligibility restricted to Maldivian residents only.

Last years Champions, Sunquick Lily and Runners up, Sugar Cone played each other in the same group of the 3 group draw that took place on Friday 1st April.

Avia Maldives v MACL

The superb MACL won a fantastic final match against an equally exciting Avia Maldives.

Avia Maldives batted first. Jilwaz Rasheed hit from his boots scoring 51 from 26 balls including 5 6s and 3 4s. Aiham Ziyad, run out on the penultimate ball for 27 runs from 16 balls gave good support as the team posted a reasonable 118 target for MACL to chase down.

MACL controlled the run chase superbly showing great character and nerve in the final match to be victorious against a ‘heads down’ approach from Avia Maldives.

Adam Nasif, again in the headlines with a match winning 34 from 7 balls, Muawiyath Abdul Ghanee 33 from 8 balls and Mohamed Saafee 26 from 8 Balls.

MACL won by 5 wickets.


CBM Vice President Ahmed Hussain and Special guest Ahmed Naasir, Founder and CEO of Lily International Group handed over the trophy and 8000mvr in prizemoney to the CHAMPIONS MACL and a trophy plus 3000mvr to the RUNNERSUP Avia Maldives.

Individual awards were presented to Jilwaz Rasheed for ‘Most Runs Scored’ (155 runs) and to Ameel Ahmed Mauroof for ‘Most Wickets Taken’ (7 wickets).

The Cricket Board of Maldives wishes to thank all the Players, Players Families, Team Officials, Match Officials and all the cricket family for supporting an exciting tournament and being part of the longest running Ramadan sports event in Maldives.


SEMI-FINALS

Semi Final 1
4pm: ARC v Avia Maldives

It was a masterclass in booming shots int he forst semi final of the Open Tournament as Avia opened the batting with a HUGE 169 from 8 Overs.

Jiwaz, Yaaseen and Rizan all scored 34 unbeaten with 14 maximums struck.

In reply, ARC went ofr it in this knockout match, Nashath scored 72 with 9 maximums and 3 bloundaries supported by Leem 56 as they reached 154, a total worthy of winning probably any other match in the history of the tournament.

Avia Maldives defended their total and are in the GRAND FINAL to be played on Friday.

Avia Maldives won by 15 runs.


Semi Final 2
5pm: Sunquick Lily v MACL

Sunquick Lily employed the ‘timed Out’ tactic to keep national team batsmen Haziq 54 and Azyan 38 in the middle as they battled against some fine bowling to reach 108/7 in their innings.

MACL were not daunted by the target and sprinted away to victory in the 7th over scoring 112 for 1 wicvket. Ameel 36 and Adam Nasif with 36 and 27 respectively.

The GRAND FINAL takes place on Friday from 4pm at Ekuveni Cricket Ground… MACL v Avia Maldives…the battle of Velana!

MACL won by 6 wickets.

Group Match 1
4pm: Merry Corner v Avia Maldives

Match Officials:

Merry Corner batted first and lit up the skies with 8 sixes as they reached 102/4 from their 8 Overs.
Haikal retired as per the rules on 33. Haneef and Azlee scored 12 each. 39 extras let down the bowling of Avia Maldives apart from the impressively economical Shadhuhan taking 2 wickets for just 4 runs from 12 balls – with no extras.

In reply, the aviation openers Jilwaz (33) and Shadhuhan (31) both retired before Yaaseen 6* and Aiham 10* saw the target home in the 6th Over.

Avia Maldives won by 7 wickets.


Group Match 2
5pm: DSC v ARC

Match Officials:

ARC won the toss and chose to bowl first, with Leem getting picked off for boundary off the first ball before regaining his composure for an economical over.

Opener Shareef (15) and Ahmed Rashad (14) hit some scoring shots but the lions share of the runs went as extras – 58 in total.

In reply, ARC batsman Leem, opening the bowling and opening the batting, hit 35 runs from ONLY 8 balls before retiring and allowing his team mates to get on and win the match with just 2 wickets falling in the 6th Over.

Group Match 3
4pm: Sunquick Lily v IBS

Match Officials:

In the first of todays Group B matches, Sunquick boys won the toss and batted first and didn’t lose a single wicket as they cruised to set a target of 141 to IBS to win.

13 sixes 7 boundaries punished the bowlers as Sunquick Lily registered the biggest score in the Open tournament for a long time.

In reply, IBS battled hard and took the match to the final Over falling just 23 runs short with an impressive 117.


Group Match 4
5pm: Sugar Cone v Meteors

Match Officials:

Sugar Cone, one of last years finalists lost their first game against the guys from Comets Cricket Club moonlighting as the ‘Meteors’.
Sugar Cone struggled from the start and only thanks to 57 extras did they get to 107/3 from 8 Overs.

The Meteors picked their shots and strove to victory in the 7th Over. Iboo scoring 35 and Shunan coming in to the see things through with 20 from just 5 balls.

Group Match 5

4pm: Kinza Café v Lavalier

Group C kicked off today with a close encounter between Kinza Café and Lavalier.
Kinza scored 126 for the loss of 4 wickets from their 8 Overs, Salaam Mohamed scoring 30 before he was clean bowled by Assad.

In reply, Lavalier had their ownb cavalier in opening batsman Assad Abdul Ghanibut it was not enough as his 29 and 21 from Ismail Nasih got them just 9 runs short of the target.

Kinza Café won by 9 runs.


Group Match 6
5pm: Galolhu Kanmathi v MACL

MACL notched up their forst win of the tournament with a superb victory over the Kanmathi boys of Galolhu.

Batting fist, GK managed to get to a reserved 67/6 from 8 Overs. Aflah top scoring with 20 from just 5 balls.

The national team duo of Adam and Ameel ran this show, taking 5 wickets between them and then being unbeaten as opening batsmen to see the 68 to win achieved in the 4th Over.

MACL won by 7 wickets.

Group Match 7

4pm: Galolhu Kanmathi Banasfaa v Merry Corner

The Kanmathi guys heaved their way to a huge 143 from 8 Overs as Anil smashed 41 from just 10 balls, Saaed 34 and Adly 36.
Ahmed Arafath was the bowler most punished with 53 runs off his alloted 2 Overs.

In reply, Merry corner reached a normally match winning total of 115 with Arafath 21, Haikal 31 and Azlee 15.
3 of the 4 bowlers picked up wickets and were able to keep the target out of reach.

Galolhu Kanmathi Banasfaa won by 28 runs.


Group Match 8
5pm: Avia Maldives v ARC

A final ball thriller saw this match conclude with ARC batting second reaching the target of 129. Ibrahim Nashath creaming a 6 of the last ball to take all the points.

Yaaseen had earlier scored a whopping 52 from 19 balls and along with Jilwaz 37 from 15 balls posted an excellent 128. But, it was not enough.

Both mathces today some some interesting tactics of ‘timing out’ other batsmen so that the retired (after scoring 30 runs) batsmen could return to the crease.
Perhaps the jury is out on such tactics taking away the participation element of all available players. Even with this tactic employed, 2 high scoring and exciting matches were seen at Ekuveni today.

ARC won by 1 wicket.

Group Match 9
4pm: IBS v Meteors

IBS rapped up victory against Meteors with just 8 balls to spare as they chased down the 110 target. Meteors batsmen Shunan 35 and Ibrahim Ali 21 fought valiantly against a strong bowling attack as Hussain Riyaz, the pick of the bowlers snaffled 2 wickets.

In reply, Hassan 31 and Faisal 34 did the required job, along with some inconsistant bowling as they collected the points from the early fixture of the day.

IBS won by 6 wickets.


Group Match 10
5pm: Galolhu Kanmathi Banasfaa v Kinza Café

It was a similar story in the 5pm match as Kinza reached a modest 113 courtesy of 23 from Salaam Mohamed and Messers Wides and No-balls. Suzain grabbed a wicket as too did Nahid and a brace for Hassan Waheed.

Aflah again led from the front and no matter what format he plays, he always excels with the bat, this time scoring 42 from 20 balls backed up by Suzain and Siraj as the Kanmathi boys won with an Over remaining.

GKB won by 2 wickets.

Group Match 11
4pm: MACL v Lavalier

The batsmen of MACL piled on the BIG runs as they blew Lavalier away in the first of the days matches.
Adam top scored with 37 from 18 followed by Ameel on 32. The most economical bowler was Naazim going for just 14 runs.

In reply, Lavalier got some good practice in the middle for their full allotment of 8 Overs.
Ismail Nasih nudged and nibbled 24 from 19 balls before being bowled by Adam.

MACL won by 112 runs.


Group Match 12
5pm: Sugar Cone v Sunquick Lily

Winning the toss, Sugar Cone put themselves into bat first. Openers Mohamed Amir (27) and Ibrahim Ali (22) began in a positive fashion before being dismissed in 2 consecutive balls at the end of the 5th and start of the 6th Overs.

Ahmed Ikram finished the innings off with a huge slap that sent the ball over the boundary for the 6th maximum of the innings.

It was positive captaincy from Sunquick Lily to utilise each player to bowl an Over each. Azyan restricting his Over to a measley 5 runs conceded.

Sugar Cone finished on 105/2, setting a target of 106.

In reply, Sunquick Lily and Aopening batsman Azyan decided he wwanted to go home a little early today and creamed 4 6s from the 1st Over. His opening partner, Haziq followed suit and hit a six off his first ball – both batsmen retiring after scoring 30 runs.

Needing 38 from 28 balls, Rishwan and Shadhin came to the middle and wrapped voctory into a neat bundle, stuck it under their arms and left the field!

Sunquick lily won by 6 wickets.

Group Match 13
4pm: ARC v Merry Corner

Strong innings from Zakariyya (29) and Hussain Ibrahim (29*) helped steer ARC to 3 wins out of 3 in the earlier match against Merry Corner.

Ahmed Arafath was the pick of the bowler snaffling 3 wickets for 27 runs form his 2 overs. ARC put together 128/4 form 8 Overs.

In reply, Merry Corner couldn’t find the run scoring groove today. Mohamed Haikal hit a resonable 31 from 17 balls as they came up short of the target.

ARC won by 26 runs.


Group Match 14
5pm: Galolhu Kanmathi Banasfaa v DSC

DSC batsmen Ahmed Hassan (31 from 10) and Ali Nashid (35 from 14) provided the foundation of a target of 136 set to the Galholhu boys.

Amjad came in a took the DSC batting to another level as he whacked 28 from 8 balls at the end of the innings – backed up by a patient Ahmed Tholath, whom ha s an extraordinary knack of being the ‘not-out’ batsman in most matches he plays.

In reply, the Banasfaa boys had no option but to be positive form ball 1 after Mohamed Saeed fell for 1 run. At the end of the 4th Over, GKB were behind in the run rate but with mnay wickets in hand.

And, it stayed the same despite Anil’s and Ali Shareefs efforts for the reaminder of the innings as GKB reached a tame 103.

DSC won by 32 runs.

Group Match 15
4pm: Sugar Cone v IBS

Mohamed Amir top scored in the Sugar Cone Innings to help them reach 105/3 from 8 Overs. Tight bowling from Hassan Ibrahim and Hussain Riyaz restricted the run scoring except for a latye flurry from Ahmed Ikram and Hussain Riyaz.

In reply, Ahmed Munaz not out on 20 and Mahmoodh Riyaz retired on 32 led the charge to victory which came in the 7th Over. Sugar Cone bowler and CBM President Mohamed Faisal grabbing the only wicket of the innings.

IBS won by 6 wickets.


Group Match 16
5pm: Meteors v SunQuick Lily

Setting a 113 target was not enough as Sunquick Lily made their winning intentions clear despite 30 from Ibrahim Ali and 42 from Ali Nihad.

The unique action of Hassan Haziq bagged 2 wickets and one each for Rishwan and Azyan.

It was Azyan again who led form the first ball scoring 36, supported by Rishwan 33, and Haziq 23 as the juice boys took all the points scoring 114 in 5 Overs 4 balls.

SunQuick Lily won by 6 wickets.

Group Match 17
4pm: Galolhu Kanmathi v Lavalier

Opening batsmen for Galolhu Mohamed Aflah and Mohamed Nazeeh piled on big runs to bring their teams total to a whopping 155 for 1 wicket from their 8 Overs.

In reply, Lavalier were pinned back despite valiant efforts from Niyaz, Assad Abdul Ghani and Ismail Nasih. The latter hitting 3 maximums.

Alas, the organised bowling from the Kanmathi boys controlled the game as Lavalier fell 60 short of the 156 target.

Galolhu Kanmathi won by 60 runs.


Group Match 18
5pm: Kina Café v MACL

MACL cruised to victory in the late match of the day and in record style as they picked off the 61 run target in just 17 balls.

Muawiyath Abdul Ghanee not out on 13 from 6 balls and Ismail Ali not out on 35 from just 9 balls heloed secure MACL place in the semi-finals.

MACL won by 6 wickets.

Group Match 19
4pm: Galolhu Kanmathi v ARC

ARC bowlers kept the Kanmathi boys runs below 100 bagging 4 wickets and some serious tight bowling.

Ismail Anil 32, Mohamed Saeed 28 and Azim 10 fought hard against the dedicated bowling attack and managed their way to 93 from 8 Overs.

In reply, Leem 34 and Zakariyya 24 made light work of the target and won the game for ARC in the 5th Over, scoring 95 for the loss of no wickets.

ARC won by 7 wickets.


Group Match 20
5pm: DSC v Avia Maldives

It wa s asimilar story in the second match of the day, DSC batted first, Ahmed Hassan 21, Ahmed Tholath 23 were the pick of the batsmen as they trundled their inings to a close scoring 105.

Yaaseen showed what a bowler he is by taking 4 wickets and equally great fielding with 3 carefully taken catches.

Avia bided their time to the target picking off the loose balls to secure victory in the 7th over. Shadhuhan 33 and Aiham Ziyad 24.

Avia Maldives won by 6 wickets.

Group Match 21
4pm: DSC v Merry Corner

DSC gave maximum effort to reach a blistering 163/5 from their 8 Overs. Ahmed Hassan top scored with 68 as the Sifainge guys racked up the highest innings total of the year so far.

In reply, Merry Corner, already out of the competition with 3 defeats on 3, started brightly against a seasoned bowling attack.

Ahmed Azhadh 17 and Ahmed Arafath 18 top scored as the Merry Corner boys trickled their way to 93/4 from 8 Overs.

DSC won by 70 runs.
