2022 President’s Cup – T20 Championship

The second segment of the Cricket Board of Maldives flagship Senior Men’s T20 Competition throughout the Maldives is the ‘2022 President’s Cup – T20 Championship, concluded on Saturday 26 November.

The top placed 4 teams from the MILO 2022 Maldives T20 Premier League automatically qualified for the ‘President’s Cup’ and played 2 semi-finals; the winners of which played a Grand Final match.

The Cricket Board of Maldives wishes to thank the President’s Office for their assistance to help this series take place and wishes to thank the support given to cricket development by all the participating clubs, their players and their officials.

Malé Sports Club v CBL Sports

A huge congratulations to CBL Sports winning the first T20 Preseident’s Cup this weekend at Ekuveni Cricket Ground, Malé.

His Excellency President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was in attendance for todays match and presented the Champions Team with the President’s Cup and their medals. 

Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowernment Ahmed Mahloof presented Malé Sports Club with their Runners-up medals and the Man of the Final Match award to Mohamed Rishwan.

The Cricket Board of Maldives wishes to thank the crucial and vital support the government provides to cricket and it is a fantastic opportunity for the players, many of them home-grown to show their talents infront of the esteemed guests. 

Mr. Chaminda Vitana, Manager of Milo Maldives, presented the individual awards fo the 2022 Maldives T20 Premier Cricket League to:

Tharaka Ruwan – Best Batsman and Most Valuable Player

Ibrahim Rizan – Best Bowler

Dilshan Fernando – Best Fielder

CBM President Mohamed Faisal presented the match officials with certificates at the beginning of a spectacle in the bright evening sunshine.

Malé Sports Club won the toss and chose to have a bowl first and put CBL openers into bat. After taking the early wicket of Ismail Ali, Produturi Akshath Reddy scored a rapid 55 from 33 balls supported by Mohamed Babar with his 26 from 30 balls set a strong foundation of the innings.
Captain Haziq, 25 and Mohamed Azhar, 19 finished the latter overs to bring the total to 162 for the loss of 8 wickets.
With cricket magic in his arm, the metronomic Ahmed Neesham took 3 wickets with Haleemdeen Faiz and Darshana bagging a pair of scalps each. 

In reply, MSC opener Mohamed Rishwan, always a man for the big occasion, set his wheels in motion and pummeled 66 from 42 balls until he was caught in the deep by Muawiyath off the bowling of Mohamed Abdul Baseer.

Ishaq and Shiyam tried their best to get the team over the line. Despite a fine team effort, MSC finished 17 runs short in this great example of T20 cricket and the short, intense spells of pressure it creates. 

Mohamed Ehteshm Udein took 3 wickets for just 23 runs as the pick of the CBL Sports bowlers.

CBL Sports won by 17 runs.

The Cricket Board of Maldives used the opportunity of the President’s Cup to take a stand against all forms of gender based violence. With the message being conveyed and advocated by the teams players and officials. Match officials wore orange coloured shirts displaying a message ‘For prevention of gender-based violence’ and the hast-tag #IWillStandUp.

The message was loud & clear – it’s everyones responsibility to end violence against women & girls. Men & boys play an important role as change makers.

This match marks the conclusion of the Senior Men’s T20 Cricket in Malé for 2022 with over 50 matches played and 10 participating teams, this has truly been a positive event for all involved. CBM extends the thanks to the players, players families, team officials and all involved for making this last 4 months of cricket a huge success.

8am (Semi-final A) – Milan Cricket Academy (League Champions) v CBL Sports

The first of the highly anticipated semi-finals took place this morning with a convincing victory for CBL Sports over the T20 Premier League Champions Milan Cricket Academy.

CBL won the toss and chose to bat first with a strong batting line up. Muawiyath Abdul Ghanee top scored with 31 from 25 balls. Captain Haziq chipped in with 23 from 24 as he took his team to 151/8 from their 20 Overs. 

Milan bowlers Ibrahim Nashath and Adam Nasif took 3 wickets each.

In reply, opener Adam Nasif put into a spirited shift until he was caught in the 12th Over on 37 runs. Wickets fell around him and by the 18th Over all 10 wickets had fallen.
5 wickets for Ibrahim Rizan for just 13 runs from 4 Overs was a display of attacking control that many believed he has in his locker.

CBL Sports won by 62 runs.

2pm (Semi-final B) – Malé Veterans v Malé Sports Club

Malé Sports Club pulled off a convincing victory over Malé Veterans in the second Semi-Final today.

Winning the toss and choosing to bat first they racked up 2 half-centuries as they battles to a hard-fought 169 runs for 8 wickets from their 20 Overs. 

Mohamed Rishwan (51 from 37 balls) and Dinayadura Manoj (55 from 36 balls). 2 wickets each for Tharaka, aArsha and Sampath possibly kept the target to chase below 200. 

In reply, the Veterans couldn’t get a grip on a chase. Both openers and the Number 3 fell early. It was the careful 28 from 40 balls from Predeep that kept his team in with a chance until he too went back to the dugout.

Darshana Sirmal bagged 3 wickets in a famous victory for Malé Sports Club and sees them match up in the Grand Final on Saturday 26th November 2022.

Malé Sports Club won by 56 runs.

With all 45 league matches completed in the MILO T20 Premier League, Milan Cricket Academy were crowned League Champions winning all 9 of their fixtures. Malé Veterans pipped Malé Sports Club to 2nd place by way of a superior Net Run Rate (NRR) and CBL Sports made the 4th spot.
