2023 Asian Cricket Council U16 Boys East Zone

26 June to 4 July 

The cricket Board of Maldives U16 Boys Squad participated in the ACC MEN’S U16 East Zone Cup 2023. The Tournament was played at Bayuemas Oval & UKM-YSD Oval – facilities which gave the participating players an excellent opportunity to continue their cricket development.

Hosts, The Malaysian Cricket Association put in place the necessary measures to ensure the teams were well taken care of during their stay.

Thanks also goes to CBM Coach Riyaz Rasheed who unfortunately cannot attend the tournament. Riyaz had worked with the squad for some time before their departure and has been a key figure in Youth Development since 2012.

As well as the playing staff & Officials, the Cricket Board of Maldives will be represented by Development Manager Mr. Imad Ismail who is appearing as a match umpire for a selection of the matches played by the other participating nations.

Maldives v Singapore

Winning the toss, Singapore chose to bat and despite a rain delay, Maldives struck early with a wicket from the bowling of Mohamed Miuvaan. Yoosuf Laith took another wicket with a fine catch taken on the boundary by Ahmed Layaan.

The 1st innings belonged to the batsman Shreyan Chyau as he scored 129 runs from 91 deliveries until he was clean bowled by Ahmed Naisam. Singapore scored 289/3 from a reduced 30 Overs.

In reply, Maldives captain and opening batsman Mabsar Ibrahim was retired hurt on 2 runs with severe leg cramps. Adam Khalaf scored a patient 8 before he was caught.

After this, Maldives wickets fell regularly with a terrific ‘Hat-trick’ taken by bowler Harsh Venkatram. 

For 10 of the Maldives players, today was the first time they have played on a natural turf pitch and this tournament is a great opportunity for these young players to gain valuable experience to aid their cricket development for the future.

Maldives completed their innings by scoring 34/9 from 18.3 Overs.

Maldives v Hong Kong

Maldives won the toss after a rain delay of about 1 hour and chose to bat first. Adam Khalaf top scored with 10 runs from 14 balls. Mabsar Ibrahim Abdulla scored 5 from 24 balls before he was out.
The remainder of the batsmen went on to raise a target of 46 for Hong Kong to win.
Veer Mathur took 4 wickets for Hong Kong.

In reply, Hong Kong reached the target in the 8th Over with 17 scored by opener Arya Panjwani.
Mizyan Ibrahim bagged the wicket of Fazal Abubakr with help from a catch by Hamd Hussain Ali.

Hong Kong won by 9 wickets.

Maldives v Indonesia

Maldives rounded off the Group Stages with a marked improvement in performance against an equally improved Indonesian side. 

Winning the toss Maldives put Indonesia into bat first and took 9 of the 10 wickets available. Yoosuf Laith and Ibrahim Mabsar took 3 wickets each. Opening batsman Sahil, scored a fine century for his country – hitting 113 from 85 balls to get his team to 236 runs.

In reply, the Maldives game plan was to stick around on the crease and gain valuable experience. Even though rain halted the proceedings a few times, Mabsar scored 28 from 58 balls before chipping out to mid-off. Adam Khalaf watched the ball patiently for 24 runs from 65 balls before he too gave a catch.

Maldives finished on 110/9 from their allotted 35 Overs.

Indonesia won by 126 runs.

Indonesia batted first in this 6th/7th place playoff match scoring a thorough 288 for 5 wickets with 3 of their batsmen reaching 50s.
Mohamed Miuvaan and Raakin Hassan worked hard to take 2 wickets each with Hamd Hussain Ali also taking a wicket.

In reply, Mohamed Miuvaan, who has improved match by match scored 31 runs from 45 balls and Mabsar Abdulla chipped in with 11. 

Indonesia won by 208 runs

The culmination of this match marks the end of a tournament for the Maldives team that has seen the players and officials gather valuable experience of match-play cricket, tournament cricket, natural pitch conditions and made friendships with cricketers from all over East Asia.
