A.C.C. Men’s Western Region T20 – Preparation
Men’s National Squad departed to Sri Lanka today to play 5 matches against competitive Sri Lankan opposition.
C.B.M. President Mohamed Aflah and guest Ahmed Nasir greeted the squad before departure from Malé.
Head Coach Asif Khan, Assistant Coach Ahmed Neesham Nasir and Team Manager Mahmood Riyaz will be using these matches to assess the players performance, attitude and development.
The main aim of this trip is to select a final squad of 14 players to represent Maldives in the Asian Cricket Council Western Region T20 Tournament to played in Qatar next month.
Maldives will find themselves in a tough tournament playing against Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Iran. Therefore, advanced preparations and recent key staff appointments are key to ensuring our Men’s squad are ready for the challenges ahead.
This trip is the first time new Head Coach Asif Khan is travelling with the squad. Before departure he announced that this tour is where he wants to see the players show the staff what they are capable of on and off the field.
The Squad will be captained by Maldives leading wicket taker Mohamed Mahfooz and vice-captained by wicket-keeper batsman Mohamed Azzam.
Debutants to the senior national team selected for this trip are juniors Mohamed Afsah, Ibrahim Raaid and Shauf Hassan. Including youngsters is testament to the vision of C.B.M. President and Executive Committee to develop junior cricket around the country with Shauf Hassan learning his skills in Gn. Fuvahmulah – the first member of a senior national squad to be based outside of Malé.
Matches begin on 2nd September and the squad returns to Malé on 8th September.
