Fuvahmulah Ground :: From woodland to cricket ground
Work is progressing apace at the new Fuvahmulah cricket grounds. The ground is being readied for the SAARC U19 Cricket tournament scheduled to start in 31 October 2011.
The tournament is an initiative of the Government of Maldives as a means to foster greater relations among SAARC nations in the field of sports. It is one of the events held in conjunction with the SAARC Summit which is scheduled to be held in Addu City in Maldives during that period. The Government of Maldives is funding the development of new infrastructure needed for the tournament, which includes the development of ground and practice facilities. The cost of accommodation and other costs related to the hosting of the tournament are also borne by the Maldives government.
The Fuvahmulah ground project include the preparation of a cricket ground, with a pavilion and 4 slopes for spectators that can accommodate 1500 people. This is the first time that such a huge sports project is being undertaken outside the capital Male’.
CBM will conduct cricket development activities in Fuvahmulah to take advantage of the new facilities and to promote the game in the region. CBM will be organising a Level 0 coaching, umpiring and scoring programme. A coaching camp will also be held for 400 students, including girls and boys from 5 schools.
