The first 50 Overs Cricket Competition has begun on the island of Fuvahmulah continuing the passionate development of the game there by the Cricket Board of Maldives.
Three teams will play each other in a league format three times with 10 points for a win and batting and bowling bonus points up for grabs in each fixture.
Fuvahmulah Cricket Academy, Bangladesh Tigers, and Sierra Lions are the teams taking part. F.C.A. won the first T20 Competition held on the island earlier this year.
The Academy has a focus on development of cricket played by Maldivians in Fuvahmulah and brings together players that have played for many years as well as seniors that are playing for the first time and a promising group of youngsters that can gain valuable match experience. This Tournament also provides an opportunity for the first Ladies Player to play in a Cricket Board of Maldives senior mens Tournament – Mariyam Zoona Mohamed a talented young lady with lots of potential has been playing for a year and recently led her team to the joint winners of the 1st National Womens T20 Cup. Again, this shows the commitment to development of cricket on the island and within the country with women’s cricket a large focus of the International Cricket Council’s worldwide development programmes.
