ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier A 2024

The Maldives senior men’s squad have completed the qualifying tournament for the 2026 T20 World Cup with 2 wins from their 6 matches played in Malaysia from August 30 to September 6.

We thank the ICC and Malaysian Cricket for yet again hosting a marvellous competition and we wish the qualifying nations all the best as they head towards the World Cup.

The two victories came against Myanmar and Mongolia and were welcomed after a run of 4 loses. The squad performed remarkably better in the batting department than tournaments stretching back 10 years as they were able to keep wickets in hand and see out the bowling attack to the full allotment of overs.

Competing against the likes of regional powerhouses Malaysia, Singapore, Kuwait & Hong Kong and scoring more than 100 in 3 of the 4 innings can be seen as progress.

Results are viewed by many as win or lose, black or white, life or death. Within Maldives, as a small cricket community within an archipelago of 1200 islands – the CBM views results as a continuous improvement piece by piece, bit by bit and match by match. Towards 2030.

With more international games to come in October, the weeks ahead present a perfect opportunity for the players & management team to assess where the next ‘progress’ will come from but, for today we celebrate the squad bringing 2 wins back home.
